About the Project

The new technology of distribution of information through electronic publishing has made an immense impact in the area of document publishing and is becoming the fastest route to cater to the need of dissemination of scientific community. Keeping this in view, the importance and impact of electronic publishing aids in Science and Academy’s mandate of promoting and publishing scientific knowledge, the INSA being a premier scientific body took the initiative to propose a project on “Building Digital Resources: Creating Facilities at INSA for hosting S & T Journals on Online”. The Academy (INSA) approached Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) under its NISSAT (National Information System for Science & Technology) programme and submitted the above project proposal for necessary funding by the DSIR (NISSAT) which was approved. The project facilitated conversion of INSA journals from print to digital format and hosting of the same online.

The objectives of the above project are as follows:

To build up a national digital resource base with global visibility and accessibility.

To bring out electronic versions of INSA S & T Journals and to make them available on a web server.

This will lead to support and research activities by providing all time access to the full text scientific information globally.

With the above objectives in view, it is hoped that INSA to begin with shall try to create a pool of S & T resources in electronic format for global dissemination and access. Eventually, this kind of exercise may facilitate and promote such efforts and initiatives by other organizations, so that there is a strong collection of S & T information generated by Indian scientists and R & D institutions available in electronic format which is the need of the hour if one has to sustain and perform in changing information seeking patterns in the electronic environment.

It has been suggested by the DSIR (NISSAT) that those professional societies having their own web site who are interested to get a hypertext link on this web site may send their request to the INSA for necessary consideration.
